Emma Roberts Profesor Veach English Composition I January 19th, 2017 Defiled â€Å"Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them,† are words from Leviticus 19:31 (NIV). They are very applicable through the course of a famous 1606 tragedy named, Macbeth, by William Shakespeare. The main character, a Scottish general named Macbeth, receives prophecies from a trio of witches that one day he will become the mighty King of Scotland. These witches, also know as the â€Å"weird sisters,† have a consequential effect on Macbeth. Shakespeare illustrated them to be hags, fascinating and frightening nymph-like creatures that appeals to ones interests in the demonic supernatural. Macbeth was changed in the play, from a respectable man to someone unrecognizable. After the witches introduced him to the idea of being king, Macbeth’s evil , ambitious spirit was aroused. His lust for power drove him to brutally kill anyone who threatened his aspirations. During Macbeth’s reign as king, he felt threatened by his once companion, Banquo. Banquo, being the only one present with Macbeth when they first met the witches, became suspicious that Macbeth might be Duncan’s murderer. Macbeth quickly remembered the witches’ prophesy they gave to Banquo that said that his descendants would rule as kings of Scotland. Macbeth took speedy action to secure his throne, so he hired his own personal assassins to kill Banquo and his son. The killing of Banquo was succsessful, but his son Fleance, managed to escape the clutches of death. This act by Macbeth proves his madness for power that resulted from the witches’ prophesies of both Macbeth and Banquo. Macbeth’s choice went as far as killing a man he considered friend, to guarantee his reign as king. Macbeth shouldn t have listened to the witches becaus e they gave Macbeth a false sense of security. After Banquo’s murder, Macbeth sought out the witches again to see what lied in his future. The witches showed him three ghost-like apparitions. The first apparition told Macbeth to beware of Macduff. The second and
